Thousands of Sahrawis have fled to the refugee camps in Algeria, their long-time alliance, when Morocco continues to push influence inward of the disputed territory.
2003
UN proposed independence for the territory but Morocco rejected the proposal in referendum.

2018
Security Council passed Resolution 2440, to ensure the referendum in Western Sahara to tackle the long-running dispute.
2019
Resolution 2494 is passed for the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to continue its peacekeeping mission until the end of October, 2020.
