Gueguerat is a small village located at the far southwest of Western Sahara, inching 11 km away from the border with Mauritania. Currently, it is under the control of Morocco, “which [they] regard as vital to trade with sub-Saharan Africa.” (Middle East Monitor).

Leila is a natural when it comes to expressing her ideas. Despite her language barriers, the passion in her words is always expressed through powerful messages. She graduated from UWC Maastricht in 2019. During her two-year stay in Maastricht, she never once given up on an opportunity that knocks on the door. She currently resides in the Netherlands for university.

"I was chosen to study and live in UWCM and it was a dream that became a reality. Not many Western Sahara refugees get the privilege to receive such a good education. At first, I was afraid I would not be able to bear the responsibility of being the chosen from the camp in Tindouf to represent the Sahrawis. Nevertheless, I would never give up on an opportunity to raise awareness about our community’s struggles. In my first year at UWCM – I started Under the Sun with a few friends. This project was born out of my need to tackle the injustice in which the Sahrawis and provide them with an opportunity to live a secure life."
